A woman becomes pregnant when fertilized eggs are implanted into the uterus. At that time, a few women may experience implantation discharge. This discharge may take the form of a mucus-like substance containing blood. One of the reasons why this occurs is when the fertilized egg is implanted onto the walls of the uterus. Although, only a few pregnant women suffer from implantation discharge, this condition is nonetheless a serious one.
The implantation discharge is released about six to twelve weeks before the ovulation period; this is the time when fertilized eggs are implanted in the uterus. The length of the discharge period varies between women. In general, the period can be as long as two days or as short as two hours. The color of the discharge is also a crucial indicator. In most cases, the discharge is pink or brownish in color. However, the color of the discharge may also be white for a few women.
The discharge takes place due to several reasons. For instance, a brown discharge may occur due to the presence of old blood. When the blood that is used to protect the fetus, is no longer needed in the body, it is automatically released from the body as a brown discharge. Sometimes, this discharge may also be an indication of miscarriage since it may cause the fetus to burst out. In other cases, the discharge may indicate the presence of a virus (such as Verruca Virus). Many women suffer from abnormal secretions, which may occur due to itching, burning and pain in the genital areas. When there is an infection in the cervix, the color of these secretions may change to yellow, brown and sometimes green.
Any consistent or persistent brown discharge may be a sign of other complicated health problems. An early pregnancy test is taken by most of the women who experience heavy implantation bleeding. Furthermore, a woman needs to visit a doctor in order to get regular checkups and medications that would help in alleviating the situation. If the discharge is frequent, it may be an indication of ectopic pregnancy. During ectopic pregnancy, the egg is stored in the fallopian tube and heavy bleeding may cause the tube to burst. Additional symptoms, such as vomiting and serious abdominal cramps, demand that the woman take immediate actions in order to lower the likelihood of a miscarriage or to prevent further damage to the fetus and embryo.
Women need to take some precautions to deal with the implantation discharge. These women need to wear a pad or an undergarment liner during the time in which the bleeding occurs. In this case, the pad is usually cleaner and thus preferred over the undergarment liner. It is also recommended that women avoid having sexual intercourse during heavy discharge period since the intercourse may result in further infection. Women should never try to diagnose and treat the discharge themselves. Any frequent discharge containing blood is a matter of concern. Therefore, a doctor should be consulted immediately before other health complications occur.
Women who experience implantation discharge during pregnancy are generally very concerned. Most of the time, an early pregnancy test and/or an appointment with a doctor is required in order to deal with the situation, and it is always important to consider that this is very normal and is a part of pregnancy. However, if the discharge is consistent and heavy, immediate action should be taken before any serious health condition arises.
